A Youkai is a supernatural being from Japanese folklore. In Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni, several youkai are gathered at the school because of its massive size. They like to feed on the souls of humans and play mischievous tricks. In some cases, they will even attack other youkai.
There is a hierarchy system in place at the school with seven, later eight seats being given to the top-ranking youkai. These youkai are:
- Headmaster (first rank)
- Izanami (second rank)
- Higanbana (third rank)
- Azami (fourth rank)
- Kyou (fifth rank)
- Renoir (sixth rank)
- Sumire (seventh rank)
- Marie Moriya (eighth rank)
- Black Tea Gentleman (second rank from the shadows)
Other unranked youkai also exist, namely Hameln and Sakunoshin.
