For the song series, please refer you (song series)

you -Sotsugyou- (you -卒業-, lit. you -Graduation-) is an insert song and the ending theme for the final episode of the Higurashi: When They Cry - SOTSU anime.

Another edition to the "you" series, it was performed by Eiko Shimamiya, who had previously performed many big hit opening and ending themes for the Higurashi When They Cry series anime and live action movie adaptations. The song was written by the creator of the series Ryukishi07 himself, and furthermore, it was composed by dai and arranged by xaki; both of whom have a long-term involvement in the series' music production.

Kanji Romaji Translation

Hateshinaku tsudzuku
Ikusen no monogatari
Daisuki na
Kimi no tame utau yo

So many thousands of tales
Which continue incessantly;
I sing of them for you,
My beloved one

Itsudatte itsudatte
Issho ni sugoshita
Yawaraka na
Hidamari no you na hibi

Koboreta setsunasa no
Kakera wo dakishime
Mankai no sakura ni
Senaka osare

Without fail, without fail,
We were always together
Amidst those tender days
Like the warmth of the sun

As we embraced those sorrowful fragments
Which overflowed from our hands,
The mature cherry blossoms
Encourage us with a push from behind

Wake mo naku
Waraikoroge
Hashaide kaetta
Tanbomichi

Kawaranai kono
Miharashi mo
Sukoshi dake
Miosame da ne

Kyou wa kimi no
Sotsugyou no hi da yo
Mata nanika no naku koro ni[1]

We rolled around in laughter
For no reason at all
Frolicking on our way back home
Along the paddy fields

Even to this everlasting
Scenery from above;
It's time to bid farewell,
Even if just for now

Today is the day
For your graduation, so—
See you again, when something else cries

Hanamuke no kotoba wo
Tabanete okuru yo
Bokura dake no
Ganbari monogatari[2]

Kimi to issho ni
Mekutta kono karendā
Ashita kara wa
Hitori de mekuru yo

I'll bundle all of my parting words
And send them your way;
As a story of how we persevered—
For us and only us

This calendar which I had flipped
Together with you;
When tomorrow comes,
I'll turn it over on my own

Kimi ga kono sekai ni
Umareta sono toki
Boku mo onaji sekai de
Mezameta

Guuzen ga hitsuzen ni
Kawatte iku you ni
Futatsu no kokoro ga
Kasanariatta

At that very moment in which
You were born into this world,
I awakened as well
Within that very world

It almost felt like coincidence
Had melted into an inevitability,
As both of our hearts overlapped
Like they were one

Futari de utau
Kono uta mo
Poketto ni
Shimaikonde

Ashita ga
Kagiri aru koto
Shiranai furi shite
Jareatta

Hare no sugata
Yakitsukete harari
Mata nani ka no naku koro ni

Even this song
A song that's for two
Into our pockets it goes,
Neatly tucked away

Pretending to not know
That the future has an end,
We fooled around together
As much as we could

That glorious form of you at your best—
Searing it into my mind, ever so gently
See you again, when something else cries

Matsuribayashi tooku
Chikaku ni hibiku
Minna no kokoro wo
Tomoshite iku

Nido to modorenai
Keshiki ga toozakaru
Chiisana mune no
Itami wo yadoshite

Music from the festival echoes
Both faraway and nearby,
Lighting a flame in every soul
As it goes by

The scenery we can never return to
Moves away from us,
Carrying with it, the tiny ache
From within our hearts

Higurashi ga sato ni
Hibikiatte
Somaru yamahana to
Hoshidzukiyo

Itetsuku kazahana wo
Norikoete
Sakura wa sakihokoru

Within our hometown,
The cries of the higurashi chorus
Dyeing the mountainsides
And nights of moon and stars

And at long last, they overcome
Even the storms blossoming with snow;
As cherry trees stand proud in full bloom

Hanamuke no kotoba wo
Tabanete okuru yo
Bokura dake no
Ganbari monogatari

Kimi no uta ikusen no
Kinou to ashita wa
Hana to natte boku e
Furisosogu deshou

I'll bundle all of my parting words
And send them your way;
As a story of how we persevered—
For us and only us

Your poems which speak
Of todays and tomorrows in thousands,
Are sure to turn into flowers
As they shower upon me

Notes[]

  1. Mata nanika no naku koro ni (また何かのなく頃に, lit. See you again, when something else cries) are Rika Furude and Satoko Houjou's final words to each other as they part ways at the end of the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu anime.
Story of Perseverance) is a reference to the sardonic phrase used by Rena Ryuugu in Tsumihoroboshi to describe the trials and tribulations she faced to protect her family which ended with her murdering Rina Mamiya and Teppei Houjou to save her father from their badger game. She once again uses the phrase in Oniakashi after facing a similar scenario.
Ryukishi07 has used this term in a positive light instead, as a homage to Rena and the Higurashi series as a whole.
