June 21, 11:00 PM, Assembly Hall Part 1 (6月21日午後11時 集会所① Rokugatsu Ni-juu-ichi-nichi Gogo Juu-ichi-ji—Shuukaijo: Ichi) is the third chapter of Yoigoshi-hen.
Summary[]
Yae and Takumi are inside the meeting hall, with Takumi asking Yae to drink with him; Yae declines, as she’s the one driving. Takumi says not to worry as this is an abandoned village, and he angrily throws his beer can at the wall and almost hits Yae, demanding that she drink. He yells that Yae was the one who invited him to come to the village, and Yae begins crying and apologizing, causing Takumi to stop. Displeased, Takumi goes to sleep as Yae continues apologizing. Yae checks the time as 11:00 and puts a blanket on Takumi when she hears a loud noise, opening the door to find Otobe and Mion outside.
Otobe asks Yae if they can have shelter from the rain and Yae struggles to answer them. Otobe asks Mion to put her wrapped-up thing away while saying that they’re not suspicious people. Inside the meeting hall, Otobe looks at the discarded Onigafuchi Defense Alliance posters and banners as Yae offers them snacks. Mion looks at Takumi sleeping in the back and asks if that’s Yae’s husband, and she explains that they’re not really married. Mion and Otobe eat, with Mion asking him if she cna tell the difference between broccoli and cauliflower. Otobe is confused.
Yae asks why they came to the village. Otobe explains that he came with friends and they all disappeared along with their car, and Mion starts laughing. She starts telling them both about onikakushi, the act of demoning away. The Onigafuchi Swamp near Hinamizawa was said to lead to hell, and long ago demons had come from there and started coexisting with humans, leading to Hinamizawa’s villagers becoming half human and half demon. The villagers were said to transform and drag people away during the night, giving rise to the term “onikakushi.” Cars and people disappearing even now wouldn’t be too strange, and Mion drinks while thinking that someone else will arrive.
Suddenly, Ryuunosuke Arakawa bursts through the door and tells them to call the police, saying that a car full of people who’ve committed carbon monoxide suicide have been found. Arakawa can’t call on his own phone since he dropped it in a puddle. Yae’s phone is out of range, and Otobe doesn’t have much battery left. Otobe goes out and tries to call, however the battery dies.
