June 22, Dawn (6月22日 夜明け Rokugatsu Ni-juu-ni-nichi Yoake) is the tenth chapter of Yoigoshi-hen.
Summary[]
Arakawa continues to praise Mion for her fighting prowess as Otobe muses on her words. The group soon comes across the car that Otobe’s group drove in, the one with the carbon monoxide suicide. Otobe peers inside the window to see his friends dead and looking peaceful. Otobe realizes that crimes cannot be measured, and he’s no better than Yae for giving up so easily. He pulls out the bank card and thinks about how he never wanted to admit he messed up and chose to die instead of fixing everything. He believed his parents would hit him when he got home and told them about his debt, which is why he was so quick to commit suicide. Mion says the church believes the souls of those who kill themselves won't be saved and that throwing your life away is something you should never do. Arakawa says that doesn't stop so many youth suicides from occurring anyway.
Otobe opens the car door to bow and apologize to his dead friends when he starts hearing their spirits talking, much to Arakawa's discomfort. Chiaki allows Otobe to keep the bank card if it means he can pay off his debt, but he returns it to her anyway and promises that he will work hard. Chiaki laments that they could’ve survived if they just had a more serious conversation with themselves, and her spirit disappears after telling Otobe to try his best. Otobe bows once more. Mion is pleased at Otobe’s growth and muses that human life is like a toothpaste tube: they use it to the last drop. Otobe agrees.
