World War III is a historical event in Ciconia When They Cry's timeline that took place 100 years before the present day.
Not much is known about how WW3 started or what happened, as information and research into it is forbidden worldwide, except in specific cases. What is known is that the world was almost destroyed, with a nuclear winter being avoided due to new technology such as 8MS.
The event is used as a division point of history into two periods: B3W (possibly "Before 3rd War") and A3W (possibly "After 3rd War"). The war and its aftermath caused a reconfiguration of the power balance and the world order, leading to the rise of factions—regional alliances of several nations or parts of them. The new world order is dominated by the Latin American Treaty Organization, though the Arctic Ocean Union is dissatisfied with this and wants to restore their B3W world hegemony.
