Umineko no Naku Koro ni Murasaki: Forgery of the Purple Logic (うみねこのなく頃に紫: Forgery of the Purple logic When the Seagulls Cry Purple: Forgery of the Purple logic) is a manga-exclusive extra arc of Umineko When They Cry. It was written Hitohira, supervised by Ryukishi07, and illustrated by Kurumi Suzushiro. It was serialized in Comp Ace magazine from July 26, 2012 to May 26, 2013, and later collected into 2 volumes. Noticeably, it is the only spinoff to share the When They Cry 4 subtitle with Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru, whether intentional or not.
Synopsis[]
Beatrice starts another game against Battler Ushiromiya, focused entirely on the whodunnit; no magic or fantasy scenes are involved. She creates a detective character, Erika Furudo, to serve as the main character of this new game. This game also centers around the use of Purple Statements. Characters who are not culprits are telling the truth when they speak in purple, but culprits (those who have killed or will kill someone) may lie when they use purple.
Contest[]
Readers were encouraged to solve the mystery, with the Twitter account @umineko_purple officially created to post hints about the story.[1] Kadokawa held a contest called the "Umineko no Naku Koro ni Murasaki Perfect Proof Fair" (「うみねこのなく頃に 紫」完全証明フェア), offering prizes to readers who mailed in their solutions. Readers who mailed in a ticket included with Volume 1 could win a telephone card illustrated by Suzushiro, with 50 winners to be chosen.[2] Readers who sent in the ticket included in Volume 2 would receive an autographed artwork by Ryukishi07 and Suzushiro, with 10 winners to be chosen.[3] After contest winners were announced, the true solution was supposed to be published on the Comp Ace website, however this never happened. One user in 2014 claimed that nobody has spoken up about winning the contest, leading them to think it a scam.[4]
One user on Twitter asked Ryukishi about it, and they were told the solution would be published on the Kadokawa homepage and to contact Kadokawa themselves for more info.[5] Another user in the comment section of Volume 2's page on Kadokawa's website claimed that they contacted Kadokawa themselves but was told that there was nobody working there who knew what the solution was.[6]
