- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 Yubikiri genman, uso tsuitara hari senbon (指切拳万、嘘ついたら針千本) is a chant uttered by participants engaging in a pinky swear. More likely to be used by young children when they make promises or share secrets, it signifies complete and abject loyalty. An English equivalent would be "Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye".
The full mantra is "Yubikiri genman, uso tsuitara hari senbon nomasu" (指切拳万、嘘ついたら針千本呑ます, lit. Finger chop and ten thousand punches—if you lie, you shall swallow a thousand needles). The grisly mantra is speculated to have arisen from medieval traditions, where people must cut off their pinky finger if they break a promise—or may offer it to someone as a sign of loyalty. The ten thousand needles are said to refer to Porcupinefish, and not actual sewing needles.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 Rinne (輪廻, Saṃsāra) refers to the cycle of death and rebirth, which is a fundamental belief in most Indian religions. According to the concept of Saṃsāra, all existence is connected and cyclical. One's soul is not liberated after death and must continue to be reborn as different beings in various realms and this cycle goes on until the soul achieves emancipation. Even the gods and higher beings are not exempt from this cycle.
