Souhei Origuchi (折口 宗平 Origuchi Sōhei) is one of the main protagonists of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Oni. He is Ryou Sonozaki's friend.
Appearance
Souhei as a child
Souhei has black hair with a cowlick. As a child, he wore a short black cloak, white unofmr shirt, black uniform pants, white socks, and geta sandals.
Personality
As a child, Souhei is energetic and hot-blooded. As an adult he likes to smoke.
Background
As a child, Souhei was the leader of the Hinamizawa games club and played with Ryou, Seiji, and Ritsuka.
He would later marry Ryou and become Souhei Sonozaki.

Role in the Story
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Oni
A young Souhei meets Seiji, Ritsuka, and Ryou at Furude Shrine to play tag. Souhei wins and Ryou loses by being the first to be caught, and so Souhei makes her enter the shrine's ritual storehouse at night alone. Souhei and the group join Ryou inside the storehouse later that night anyway, where they discover a picture scroll behind the Oyashiro-sama statue talking about "demon descending".(Higurashi Oni Chapter 1)
After sneaking into the storehouse, Souhei and his grandfather were chased out of the village for unknown reasons. During this time, Souhei got a job working with a foreign trade company. His grandfather passes away later, with his last words being to return to Hinamizawa. The adult Souhei does so 15 years later in 1938, wanting to figure out what happened in Hinamizawa then.

Souhei reunites with his club friends but is surprised to see how much they've changed. Souhei is especially surprised to see Oryou's name written as 鬼両 with the character for demon after returning a charm to her. The club has fun at the Watanagashi Festival that night and drink sake together. Souhei says he's going to be living at his parents' old house in Hinamizawa and asks his friends to join him tomorrow, wanting to know everything that happened since he left.(Higurashi Oni Chapter 2)
