Someutsushi-hen (染伝し編, lit. Dye Diffusion Chapter) is an extra arc from Higurashi When They Cry. It is a partial visual novel adaptation of the manga-exclusive arc Onisarashi. It was first released with Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kizuna Volume I on June 26, 2008 as the first arc in the Advanced Story.
Synopsis[]
It has been almost a year since Natsumi and her family moved to Kakiuchi from Okinomiya. At first, Natsumi was confused by the unfamiliarity of city life, but now she is enjoying herself by going out with her good friends and working part-time. Then one day, Natsumi receives a confession from her classmate Akira, whom she has been admiring. Natsumi is overjoyed and happy, but when she passes by a news report on TV, she learns of a terrible incident in her hometown of Hinamizawa. As a result, a disturbing shadow begins to descend around Natsumi...

Natsumi Kimiyoshi has a happy life with her family in Kakiuchi City after moving there from Okinomiya. Things seem to be looking up after Natsumi's crush Akira Toudou confesses to her, but when the Great Hinamizawa Disaster occurs and people from Hinamizawa start committing bizarre crimes, Natsumi becomes afraid of what will happen when her friends discover she's also from the area. Meanwhile, the detective Tomoe Minai investigates these strange incidents, and her investigation causes her to cross paths with Natsumi.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kizuna[]
This arc was first released in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kizuna Volume I on June 26, 2008 for the Nintendo DS.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sui[]
This arc was included in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sui alongside the entire Advanced Story, released on March 12, 2015 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou[]
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou included this arc and was released on July 26, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch and January 24, 2019 for the PlayStation 4.
Comparisons to Similar Arcs[]
Someutsushi-hen is based off of Onisarashi-hen and has several differences:
- Tomoe Minai and Shingo Fujita are introduced as new characters, the former becoming the main character of the Advanced Story. Meanwhile, Mamoru Akasaka and Kuraudo Ooishi are not present; the latter instead having a short appearance.
- Someutsushi-hen's ending differs from Onisarashi-hen in that Natsumi commits suicide by tearing her throat out on the school roof.
