Phase 2 will be the second story arc in Ciconia When They Cry. It was originally delayed to an unspecified date in 2020[1] but has since been delayed indefinitely.
Development[]
On the 07th Party 7 livestream which announced the indefinite delay, Ryukishi07 said it was done because "it was like writing about Godzilla and Godzilla really ended up coming". A preview of Phase 2's script was later released with an artbook on the 07th Public Bath event on June 6, 2021.[2]
In a livestream on August 31, 2022, Ryukishi said that Ciconia was his reason to work and live, and that he wanted to finish outside work before continuing it.[3]
In a livestream on April 29, 2023, Ryukishi hinted that Valentina and Maricarmen would get more spotlight and have a fight scene together. He also stated that his favorite character was Meow.[4][5]
In a response to an Umineko When They Cry fanzine sent to Ryukishi, he stated that the Russian invasion of Ukraine made him feel uncomfortable writing about war.[6] He later stated that it wasn't a good time to write such themes as entertainment.[7]

- ↑ Umineko 16th Anniversary Fanzine: "As you know, sad things are happening all over the world today. In particular, the ravages of war in Ukraine made me feel unscrupulous to continue writing about war, even if it is fiction. Only in peace can we enjoy horror and tragedy, mystery and murder as fiction. However, in these times of peace, which are very difficult to describe, isn't Ciconia inappropriate? That is what I thought. Ciconia is the first of my works in which the ending of the story is clearly defined from the beginning. Therefore, it is not possible to change the synopsis. However, to put it in Umineko's style, the way the story is read out can make a big difference in what is told, even if it is the same story. What kind of stories do you recite in these times of uninterrupted sad news of wars and natural disasters? We sincerely apologize for the wait, but I hope you will give me time."
