Lambdadelta reminisces about her past. Boredom is poison for witches, so Lambda often goes out to grant humans’ wishes. She hopes to come across humans with unexpected wishes but winds up becoming disappointed, comparing them to tea leaves; without them, black tea is just hot water, and too many tea leaves will make it undrinkable. Lambda tries to find just the right amount of tea leaves in the humans she meets. She secretly sets an hourglass and expects a human to make a wish in 5 minutes. If the timer runs out, she leaves.
Most of the humans who do make wishes end up being annoying to Lambda. Those that wish for more wishes seem like they want to be creator-like, taking something finite and making it infinite. Lambda just grants them the wish and disappears, leaving them to think about their thousands of wishes and not granting them until the day they die.
Another boring wish is to have more money. A traveller in the desert can’t eat or drink money, and the things that can be gained with money are limited by the rules of the currency system. People also wish for love and happiness, and Lambda just tells them they already are loved and happy; love and happiness fill the world, yet there are people who don’t understand it.
“I want a power that doesn’t lose to anyone.” Lambda muses that there’s no point in having the will to beat someone if there’s no opposition; she can grant all sorts of amazing wishes yet most humans can’t imagine past the limits of their society.
Out of all these humans, there’s one little girl that Lambda took a great interest in. This girl wished that all of her efforts would definitely come true. Lambda got a little confused at this; it sounded like the girl wanted to have infinite wishes, but the look in her eyes stood out from all the rest. Lambda’s hourglass ran out, but she decided to listen to the girl’s story some more. The girl had a dream she definitely wanted to make come true, and she wanted Lambda to make her believe in it. Lambda asks what her ultimate goal is, and the girl replies: “I will become a god.” Lambda granted her wish on the spot, guaranteeing that her endeavors would certainly come true. The girl’s determination is fate, but Lambda’s wish has a weak point in that if the girl were to waver in her efforts, her fate would most certainly change. Even so, Lambda would have turned the girl into a god if she just said “turn me into a god,” but her mind would end up dispersing.
In the end, Lambda thinks she may have overestimated the girl, but it didn’t matter since it resulted in the creation of a new witch being sent to her.
In all the worlds Lambda went to afterwards, no other humans were as special as that girl; not until she found another one. This one wanted to become a witch. Lambda was excited to hear words like this, and she listened to the kid’s story. The kid wants to bring forth any wish they want, claiming that they already are a witch. This kid had the same determination as that girl back then, wishing to fulfill all of their endeavors. Lambda asks the kid if they have what it takes to stand up to the Witch of Certainty, telling them that they should still be a witch even if nobody recognizes them as such. The kid knows they are transcending human territory, and they want another witch to acknowledge them as such. Lambda asks what the kid will do if she says no, and they reply that they will make Lambda accept them. Impressed by this declaration, Lambda takes a look through the wannabe witch’s compendium and sees the huge compendium of magic they’ve created; it’s still incomplete but Lambda knows the kid is working to improve it and may yet reach it in time. This compendium is even more impressive since, as witches seek more freedom and power, they begin to drift away from the human world; this kid had accomplished all of that and still remained a human. Making her decision, Lambda uses her name as the Witch of Certainty to declare that this kid is a witch, becoming their guardian for as long as their “absolute magic world” becomes absolute. Lambda goes to invite a friend over to share in this black tea that she’s cultivated.
