Marutake (丸竹) is a character appearing in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei. He is a freelance writer and photographer who visits Hinamizawa occasionally.
Appearance[]
Marutake has black hair, wears glasses, and has a circle beard. He wears a vest, black undershirt, khakis, and black boots. Marutake carries a camera with him.
Personality[]
Marutake seems to be a bumbling man who loves photography, especially taking pictures of stars, and likes to see Sakiko in cute costumes. Marutake greatly looks forward Hinamizawa becoming a World Heritage site and gets serious whenever talking about incidents related to Polaris and Oyashiro-sama's curse.

Marutake is a freelance writer who visits Hinamizawa regularly. He's a regular customer at Smile Shop and is called "Uncle" by Sakiko.

Oniokoshi[]
Marutake is introduced when he sees Keitarou and Kihiro sitting outside Smile Shop and takes a picture of them. He introduces himself and gives them a business card that says "BBKB" on it, but quickly takes it back since it's the wrong one. Marutake talks with the boys about concerns that Oyashiro-sama's curse may ruin Hinamizawa's image. Keitarou thinks he means the old incidents that happened a long time ago, but Marutake ominously mentions that it occurred last year: one person died and another disappeared on the night of Watanagashi, and the one that disappeared was a member of Polaris. Marutake notices Keitarou's Polaris charm and tells him about bad rumors surrounding Polaris, and an incident where two members killed a person's family and set their house on fire before committing suicide.(Oniokoshi-hen Chapter 2)
Marutake encounters Keitarou and his friends again during the Watanagashi Festival while Kururu Isshiki is away. He brings up the "Ring of Stars", supposedly an organization in Polaris that eliminate the religion's enemies, even if they must violate their doctrine to do it.(Oniokoshi-hen Chapter 5)
Hoshiwatashi[]
Marutake encounters Keitarou in the Polaris village during their festival and takes a picture of him. He introduces himself and claims to be taking pictures of the Polaris festival with permission from the Holy Mother to improve the image of the religion. Marutake is surprised that Keitarou has such sympathy for Polaris despite being from Hinamizawa. He then tells Keitarou about bad rumors surrounding Hinamizawa, including the series of mysterious deaths from decades ago and its resurrection in the previous year.(Hoshiwatashi-hen Chapter 5) Marutake continues to take pictures of the festival as participants feast and sing.(Hoshiwatashi-hen Chapter 6) Marutake talks to the Holy Mother later and thanks her for letting him come, saying that his pictures will be of use.(Hoshiwatashi-hen Chapter 7)
After an angry mob of Hinamizawans storm the Polaris settlement and kill every single member, a video goes out analyzing the situation, featuring some of Marutake's pictures of the Polaris festival. The video mentions some suspicious details regarding Polaris's past and Keitarou attending the festival, pushing the idea that Polaris may not entirely be a victim of the incident.(Hoshiwatashi-hen Final Chapter)
