Marie Moriya (森谷 毬枝 Moriya Marie) is one of the main protagonists of Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni. She was originally a human girl suffering sexual abuse from her teacher, and after becoming the youkai Mesomeso-san, she began exploring the world of youkai.

Profile[]

School Youkai of the 8th Rank. Mesomeso-san. A youkai rumored to live in the former school building's bathroom. Even if one hears it talking through the door, they must not reply. Unimpeded in her youkai form, she became stronger than she was in life.

Instead of going on the occasional hunt, she sometimes sneaks into the cafeteria.

She also possesses a mysterious ability to find tea cakes from seemingly thin air.

When challenged to learn how to freely change her clothes with her own power, this was what she came up with. It is a mix of the uniform from the school she wanted to attend, and her innermost feelings of wanting to do whatever she wants.

She finds it embarrassing and rarely puts it on, but when she does, beware - it means that she's gone into serious mode. In accordance with the rules of the story of Mesomeso-san, she pulverizes her enemies with superhuman strength.

She has made it her mission in death to seek out poor children targeted by youkai and help them.

Personality[]

Marie is a timid and quiet student who is frequently the target of bullying and abuse. She has short orange hair and purple eyes. She wears glasses and wears school clothing. She has low self-esteem and an inferiority complex towards her older siblings and peers. Because of this, Higanbana tends to use her as her lackey (as shown in "Welcome to the Mirror World", where she ordered Marie to go find her cake within five minutes.)

However, after becoming "Mesomeso-san", she starts to become more confident and will stand up for people who are stuck in a bad situation.

In the chapter "Welcome to the Mirror World", her mirror counterpart is described as being "a ruthless tyrant." In contrast to the original Marie's gentle personality, the mirror world version is more cynical, sometimes even disrespectful. She is also very violent.

In the Infirmary, she tells Higanbana she envies her because she lives in the Infirmary, while she has to live in the old school building's bathroom.

The Princess' Lie[]

In The Princess' Lie, Marie fights Black Tea Gentleman in order to free Midori from his curse. She ultimately wins, but Midori remains under his control to avoid her unbearable reality. Trivia[]

  • It's revealed in Volume 2, Chapter 7 of the Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni Manga that Marie is in her third year of Elementary School.
    • Given there are more than 10 classes (as class names), assuming she's a third year student in the VN canon, her classroom would be named 3-8 (as continuously reference as the 8th class).
  • In the regular world, Marie stays as the Eighth Ranked Yōkai "Mesomeso-san", but her counterpart in the Mirror World is the First Ranked Yōkai "Geragera-san". Mesomeso means "sobbing" and Geragera means "guffaw" or "laugh".
