Kotohogushi-hen (言祝し編, lit. Congratulating Chapter) is a console-exclusive arc first included in the fourth volume of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kizuna. It is considered a prequel to the main story.

Plot Summary

This arc is set in the distant past and tells a possible origin story for Hanyuu.

Long ago, the Ryuun came to Earth and accidentally brought demons with them, who terrorized humanity. Hai-Ryun Yeasomul Jedha was a Ryuun warrior who protected humans from these demons and took the name of Oyashiro-sama after demons attacked Onigafuchi Village. Yeasomul rescues a baby from the ruins and turns it over to survivors, who raise it as her reincarnation.

When Yeasomul returns 20 years later she meets Riku Furude, the young heir to the Furude family and begins to develop a strange friendship with him.

Release History

Text Story

Kotohogushi-hen was first released in text format in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri Official Guide Book on April 14, 2007. It acts as a prequel to Miotsukushi-hen. It was written by Kiichi Kanou and had illustrations by Akira Tsuda and Takegen.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kizuna

This arc was expanded upon and first adapted into visual novel format with Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kizuna Volume IV on February 25, 2010 for the Nintendo DS.

Major differences include:

  • the addition of Shino Kimiyoshi and Mao Sonozaki.
  • more details given to Hanyuu's people the Ryuun, and half-blood and pureblood Ryuun being given the names of Grifys and Putus, respectively.
  • more content featuring Ouka's relationship with Hanyuu as an adult.
  • In the original version, the demon that possesses Riku in the climax had looped throughout many worlds in an attempt to kill Hanyuu. In the new version, this part is absent. Instead, the demon is responsible for attacking Onigafuchi years ago.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sui

This arc was included in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sui, released on March 12, 2015 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou included this arc and was released on July 26, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch and January 24, 2019 for the PlayStation 4.
