Kataribanashi-hen (語咄し編 Storytelling Chapter) is a series of Higurashi When They Cry fan-made anthology story collections. They began as submissions to the Square Enix Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Grand Prize (スクウェア・エニックス ひぐらしのなく頃に大賞) contest and have been published in various formats.
History[]
First Contest[]
The first Higurashi Grand Prize contest was started by Square Enix to commemorate the anime and manga adaptations of the original Higurashi sound novels.[1] The submission period began on March 28, 2006[2] and ended on June 30 that same year. Fans were directed to write original stories based around the Higurashi world and email them to Square Enix, to be judged by a group including Ryukishi07 himself, Karin Suzuragi, Yutori Houjyou, Jiro Suzuki, and Yoshiki Tonogai, the artists behind the manga adaptations of the Question Arcs. The grand prize was 200,000 yen and plans to adapt the winning story into a drama CD. The winning stories would also be published and released as a single book, tentatively titled Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Anthology Grand Prize (ひぐらしのなく頃に アンソロジー大賞)[1]
At the end of the submission period, there were 523 stories in total. Beyond the 5 chosen by Ryukishi's group, 30 others were chosen and split into two groups of 15, with fan votes held on the websites Animate and Gamers. The fan vote period ran from July 31 to August 21, 2006.[3]
The results were finally revealed in various Square Enix magazines and on their main website on September 13, 2006. The Grand Prize winning story was Nienagashi, by TeraM. 9 other stories were chosen for a total of 10, and were all published in the novel titled Square Enix Short Story Grand Prize Anthology: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kataribanashi-hen (スクウェア・エニックス小説大賞アンソロジー ひぐらしのなく頃に 語咄し編).
