Kaidan to Odorou, Soshite Anata wa Kaidan de Odoru (怪談と踊ろう、そしてあなたは階段で踊る, Let's Dance with Ghost Stories, and You Dance on the Stairs) is a light novel written by Ryukishi07 and illustrated by Tomohi.
Notably, the story is said to take place in the same Shishibone City from Ryukishi's other work Higurashi When They Cry, which was still being produced at the time. Kaidan to Odorou features a character named Miyoko Tanashi, and a similarly-named character would later be introduced in Higurashi. Additionally, the official 07th Expansion website categorizes Kaidan to Odorou under "Higurashi related works" (ひぐらし関連作品 Higurashi kanren sakuhin)[1]. Comments by Ryukishi suggest that Kaidan to Odorou is a separate work, however.[2][3]
Synopsis (Translated)[]
That summer, we created a "monster"—As a small rebellion against the boredom of everyday life, we created a new school ghost story, "The Curse of Ohone-sama". However, after a request for a curse is thrown into a money box at Tanuki Shrine, our daily lives began to be distorted.
The masterpiece of youth suspense horror, set in Shishibone City, the same place as Ryukishi07's immortal masterpiece "Higurashi When They Cry", is vividly visualized by the up-and-coming Beam Nozawa!
"If the incidents that take place in this work had happened outside of school, the story would never have been like this." (Ryukishi07)
Plot Summary[]
Tomohiro Miyajima and his friends are middle schoolers who are bored of everyday life. After breaking into a donation box at a shrine, they get the idea to make money by creating a ghost story called "Ohone-sama" and playing pranks on their classmates related to it. The plan is successful and donations start going to the shrine, but one day they receive an envelope with a large amount of cash and a request: "Please curse Miyoko Tanashi". Miyoko starts to suffer from Ohone-sama's curse the next day, seemingly without the boys' involvement, and Tomohiro sets out to find what's really going on.

- ↑ Higurashi no Nakasekata Part 4: "[Kaidan to Odorou is] not a Higurashi side-story, but I think it’s a fun supplemental element for those who know the Higurashi world. It wouldn’t make sense if people who don’t know about Higurashi couldn’t understand it at all, so I tried to make it a story that could be read as a whole, and if people who know about Higurashi read it, there would be room for doubt as to whether it was a story of this or that character or not. My policy is, as is the case with Onisarashi, which is serialized by Comp Ace, those who know the original story would know, and if you don’t know the original, it still will be fun to read. This is what I want to emphasize."
- ↑ Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Famous Scene Investigation File 100 Long Interview: "Those who have read the original story already know what it's about, so they enjoy the changes that happen when the original story is turned inside out. In the case of gaiden stories, the story is completely unpredictable, so I think it's something that people can enjoy purely as a manga. I also wanted to try a new challenge myself. When I reached the end of that challenge, I wrote "Kaidan to Odorou, Soshite Anata wa Kaidan de Odoru" (published by Kodansha Sirius) and "Gakkou Youkai Kikou" (published by Dragon Age Pure), which are completely new works that have nothing to do with Higurashi."
