Hoshiwatashi-hen Final Chapter (最終話 Saishuu-wa) is the tenth and final chapter of Hoshiwatashi-hen.

Summary[]

Some Polaris members pray with the Holy Mother as Kururu and others defend the church from the invading Hinamizawans. Keitarou cradles his neck wound and falls back inside the room as Inori quickly locks the door. An angry Sakiko tries to break it down. As Inori tends to him, Keitarou wonders why everything turned out like this and laments that he'll die without doing anything. He weakly tells Inori to escape, but she pokes his nose and starts crying. Inori is about to say something when the Hinamizawans finally break in and kill her with an axe strike to her head. Sakiko gives one last look at the dying Keitarou and moves on.

Keitarou remembers Inori saying how happy she was to be in Hinamizawa and wonders why nobody in the village wanted to grant her wish. Many Polaris members including the Holy Mother and Kururu are shown dead. Keitarou wonders if it's important to be talking all the time, and thinks his dad could be the Prime minister by now, and even Keitarou could become Hinamizawa's mayor. Keitarou thinks he never would have let Hinamizawa do what they did otherwise and wonders if this is really what the village is like. Keitarou takes Inori's hand and dies. The next morning, Tamaki, Kihiro, and their mothers meet up with Satoko. Satoko cries, and then the group sees a blood-covered Sakiko and other villagers returning.

News of the Polaris massacre spreads across Japan. Some of Keitarou's friends worry since he never answered their messages they sent the day of, and the regret that he was killed. A video plays recapping the history of Hinamizawa and Polaris: Hinamizawa was on the verge of becoming a World Heritage site, but then the villagers suddenly massacred 500 of their own members. Most of the villagers took part in the slaughter, and the inherent camaraderie they share will make it hard to identify who was actually responsible.

Hinamizawa used to be known as Onigafuchi before the Meiji Era, and the villagers had an idyllic view. Some believe they were actually manipulated into committing this atrocity by their god Oyashiro-sama, with arrested villagers claiming that the victims incurred Oyashiro-sama's wrath by killing his priestess. Indeed, the priestess Rika Furude was murdered the day of the incident in the hospital where she was admitted, with the video linking to another video for that topic.

The video then changes topic to focus on the victims Polaris. The Polaris Family Society was founded as an organization for domestic violence victims, and the founder the Holy Mother was revered by members. Polaris had strange precepts that forbade communication with outsiders, leading them to form a unique community. Polaris saw themselves as one big family and avoided communication with the outside world, leading them to change residences several times. An anonymous person living in a town Polaris once lived in gives testimony about their experiences: once talks with Polaris broke down, they started sending people cat and mouse heads. The neighborhood association started making moves to get them out, and during this time, some Polaris members murdered an entire family and burned their house down. There was no evidence the Polaris members were under orders, and so the Holy Mother was acquitted.

The video narrator says Polaris pretends to be weak, but they have a cunning and frightening side to them. Before the incident, Polaris had a festival, and there was one boy among them who wasn't a Polaris member but enjoyed the festival anyway; Marutake's pictures of the festival are displayed. The boy K-kun was the son of Mr. M, who had influential power in Hinamizawa and was expected to return to the village after becoming a member of Parliament. The video questions why K-kun was a victim of the incident despite being a Hinamizawa member, and if the people of Hinamizawa really did kill him. The video implies that Polaris invited an outsider like him and murdered him for some reason, and that since Polaris has a history of causing incidents to protect their community, Hinamizawa must have had some reason to commit atrocities in turn; Polaris may not be a mere victim.

The video says that whatever the case, the old Hinamizawa is gone. They ask viewers to please uncover the truth.
