Hoshiwatashi-hen Chapter 1 (第1話 Dai Ichi-wa) is the first chapter of Hoshiwatashi-hen.
Summary[]
A boy cradles a bloody wound in his throat as people kill each other with weapons amidst a burning village. The boy narrates that he loved Hinamizawa and all his friends and people in it, and was glad to hear that "she" loved it too. He takes the hand of a bloodied girl in front of him.
Keitarou Maebara is woken up by texts from his friend and his mom calling him. Keitarou heads downstairs and greets his mom and his grandparents good morning. He says he had a weird dream while on TV, the news reports on allegations about a congressman misappropriating political funds. Keitarou is excited to see his father Keiichi on TV as his mom complains that the whole family would be having fun in Hinamizawa if not for their troubles. Keitarou hopes his father isn't going to take the blame for all these rumors since he's the secretary. Keitarou finishes breakfast and heads outside.
Keitarou narrates that it is June 2019, the first year of the Reiwa Era in Hinamizawa Village. It's been 3 weeks since he moved to Hinamizawa from Tokyo. As Keitarou greets an elderly villager on his way, he continues that his dad used to live in Hinamizawa, and though his family moved to Tokyo after becoming a congressman's secretary, they still return every year; Hinamizawa's a second hometown for Keitarou. Hinamizawa was always a traditional thatched-roof village, but in recent years it's become a tourist attraction, and there are talks of turning it into a World Heritage Site. Keitarou truly loves Hinamizawa.
Keitarou sees his friend in the distance and dons a sneaky grin. He hides in a bush, and when Kihiro Ryuugu walks past, Keitarou jumps out and frightens him. Kihiro sighs at his prank. Keitarou says he saw him coming and wanted to give him a morning greeting from behind, but Kihiro yells he's lying. The boys banter as they walk, with Keitarou claiming he waited in that bush all night to surprise him. Kihiro takes some time to think about it and yells he's lying again. Keitarou says he might try that for real next time, and Kihiro shows concern for his wellbeing.
Keitarou introduces Kihiro Ryuugu as his best friend and the son of his dad's friend, Aunt Rena. Rena got married and left Hinamizawa for a while, but got divorced and moved back with Kihiro. Aunt Rena loves cute things, but she is very sharp; Kihiro is also very intuitive, but it takes him a while to figure things out. Keitarou enjoys playing pranks on him.
The boys walk up to their meeting spot, where two girls are talking about grabbing bags. Keitarou calls out to the girls, Tamaki and Sakiko, and greets them good morning. Tamaki asks Keitarou to be her guinea pig and suddenly grabs his balls. Sakiko says she might be doing it right as Keitarou gets angry, chiding Sakiko for making Tamaki do weird things again. Tamaki says she wants to grab her future husband's heart and is practicing on Keitarou. The boy asks her to let go and then lies on the ground cradling his manhood, saying that Tamaki doing that might make her husband sterile. Kihiro interrogates Sakiko, who denies putting Tamaki up to this. Kihiro yells she's lying and punches her in the face.
Keitarou introduces Sakiko Kimiyoshi, another one of his dad's friend's children, from Aunt Satoko. Sakiko had heard about Rena Ryuugu's deadly punches and sees the new generation inherited them. Keitarou says they're all in their second year of middle school while Sakiko is a third year. She's the sole daughter of the Kimiyoshi Family, one of the Three Families of Hinamizawa. Aunt Satoko married into the Kimiyoshi family and now runs a souvenir shop, with Sakiko helping out from time to time. At work, Sakiko speaks like a proper lady, but outside she's very outrageous and is good at flattering people and teasing boys.
Tamaki is shocked that Sakiko tricked her and apologizes to Keitarou. Keitarou weakly says there's no hurry since she's already popular with the boys, then threatens to end the Sonozaki Family if she tries that ever again. Keitarou narrates that Tamaki Sonozaki is yet another daughter of his dad's friend, Aunt Mion. Tamaki is the sole daughter of the Sonozaki Family, another one of the Three Families. The Sonozakis are run by Aunt Mion's mother, or Tamaki's grandmother Akane. Aunt Mion is next in line to be the head, and after that it will be Tamaki. Ever since she was a kid, Tamaki has gone on about getting married and having lots of kids.
The group chats as they walk. Keitarou says that even though he lived in Tokyo, he considers himself Hinamizawan from the bottom of his heart. He loves spending time with his friends like they were family, and he feels like he belongs. Keitarou enthuses about how happy he is to be in Hinamizawa. Kihiro, Sakiko, and Tamaki share the sentiment.
The group boards a bus, where an elderly man greets Keitarou and talks with him about his father's work. Everyone is looking forward to Keiichi returning to Hinamizawa, with the man telling Keitarou to ask for help if he needs it. The kids talk about his father being a big name in the village and how he's working to get Hinamizawa recognized as a World Heritage Site. Sakiko says if Keiichi becomes a congressman, he could use bribery to get that done, and Keitarou takes offence to the assumption his dad's corrupt.
Keitarou narrates that Hinamizawa used to have a branch school, but it's since closed down. They all take a bus to the middle school in Okinomiya. At school, Keitarou bursts into the classroom and greets good morning to everyone, getting a few replies. As Keitarou talks with some of his classmates, his friends observe how Keitarou has made many other friends in the 3 weeks he's spent here. Kihiro wonders if Keitarou is just making friends for underhand reasons, and Keitarou jokes that this is part of his world domination plan.
Keitarou laughs at Kihiro falling for his pranks again and seriously says that his father always said the most important thing was harmony among people. Keitarou agrees, saying it's about adding to his number of friends and declares he will make everyone in class his friend. Keitarou tries to demonstrate this by greeting a kid sitting in a nearby desk, but he turns away. Unfazed, Keitarou attempts to make friends with another kid and notes how he was staring at Sakiko's neckline, asking him to show more of that passion.
After class, Keitarou prepares to leave and walks the hallways alone, lost in thought. He tried to talk to other people, but some of them ignored him, making him wonder if he did something wrong or if Sakiko is spreading rumors about him. Just then, a girl walks out from the classroom in front of Keitarou, and they lock eyes. Keitarou sees she's in a lower grade and is someone he's never met before. He thrusts his hand out and starts introducing himself, but the girl jumps back in fright. Keitarou apologizes for the awkward intro and tries to make small talk, but the girl keeps stepping backward towards a flight of stairs. Keitarou notices and tries to warn her, but the girl trips and falls down them. Keitarou rushes down to help her and sees other students watching from behind the corner. Keitarou tells them to call the nurse, but they do nothing; Keitarou wonders why they're just standing still. The girl starts to cry and Keitarou picks her up to bring her to the nurse's office.
The nurse checks the girl and diagnoses that she's bleeding and has a sprain, but her bones are alright. Keitarou says he startled her and made her fall down the stairs and didn't suffer any other injuries. An assistant appears and asks the nurse Gato for a talk. Gato tells the girl to rest for a while and avoid physical activity before leaving.
Left alone with the girl, Keitarou is confused about the situation back there, wondering if he did something to the girl he wasn't aware of or if this was another one of Sakiko's schemes. Startling the girl just by calling out to her went beyond shyness. Keitarou apologizes to the girl and asks if they can be friends, introducing himself again. The girl remains silent, and Keiichi's speech about harmony among people replays in Keitarou's mind as he wonders what to do.
The girl finally begins to say something but is interrupted by another group appearing, led by a pigtailed girl who thanks Keitarou for bringing Inori to the nurse's office. Keitaou doesn't know her either, but he accepts the compliment. The other girls that came with the newcomer check on Inori, and Keitarou sees they're the same girls who were watcing on the stairs. Inori speaks with them, and the boy wonders why he's the only person she won't talk to then. Keitarou offers the girls some help, but they ignore him and leave the office. Inori gives him one last look and a bow before leaving. Keitarou is still confused, thinking Inori has some reason she couldn't talk to him and was communicating the best way she could.
The pigtailed girl asks if Keitarou if he's worried about Inori and teases him about wanting to take advantage of a quiet girl. The girl teases him some more, and Keitarou wonders how she knows his name in the first place. The girl says the Mawbara name is well-known in Hinamizawa. Keitarou asks if she lives in the village anyway since he enver saw her on the bus. The girl introduces herself as Kururu and says she gets driven to school by her parents. Keitarou introduces himself as well, and Kururu continues to tease him to the point of annoyance. Keitarou gets angry, and Kururu suddenly takes a picture of him with her smartphone.
After school, Kururu sees Keitarou off and hopes they can go home together sometime. Keitarou makes that a promise while Kihiro watches. Kihiro says Keitarou is picking up friends like a dog picks up scraps. The boys rejoin Tamaki and Sakiko at the school gate. Kihiro's face turns serious as he tells Keitarou they need to talk about the children in Hinamizawa. Sakiko puts on a grim face as she says Hinamizawa is no longer the village Keitarou knows. Inside her parents' car, Kururu scrolls through pictures of Sakiko, Tamaki, and Keitarou on her phone. As Tamaki and Keitarou look concerned, Sakiko says Hinamizawa is different because "they" came.
