Overview[]

As a tactical RPG game, players move units around a map to attack enemy units, with the goal to defeat all enemies. Higurashi Tactics has emphasis on picking up weapons on the map to grant units various skills and stat increases.

Unit Commands[]

Tactics unit screen

Unit command screen

  • 1: Move: Move a unit on the map.
  • 2: Skill: Use a unit's skills.
  • 3: Pick Up/Discard: If the unit is on the same tile as a weapon, it can be picked up and added to that unit's inventory. If there is no weapon on the ground, then the unit can discard a weapon instead.
  • 4: Pass: Pass a weapon to an ally adjacent unit. Weapons cannot be passed if there is a height difference of 4 or more tiles.
  • 5: Take: Take a weapon from an ally adjacent unit. Can also steal weapons from enemy adjacent units, with success rate based on Steal stat. Weapons cannot be taken or stolen if there is a height difference of 4 or more tiles.
  • 6: Change Equipment: Select a different weapon from your unit's inventory and equip it.
  • 7: End Turn: End turn and allow the next unit to move.

Picking up/discarding weapons and passing/receiving them can only be done before a skill is used.

Unit Stats[]

  • HP: The amount of hit points a unit has. If this reaches 0, the unit cannot be used again for the rest of the stage. When HP reaches 0, units will also drop their currently equipped weapon on the ground, or will drop a random weapon from their inventory if they don't have one equipped.
  • WT: A gauge showing how long until the unit can take action again.
  • Move: The movement range of the unit.
  • Jump: Shows how far a unit can jump to tiles higher or lower than theirs without taking damage. Also affects how much damage a unit takes when dropped onto a lower tile.
  • ATK: The amount of damage a unit can do with physical attacks. The number on the left shows the default attack value, and the number of the right shows the increase based on the equipped weapon.
  • Evade (避): Affects attack dodge rate. Can also reduce damage if the attack isn't avoided.
  • Steal (盗): Affects weapon steal rate.
  • HIT: Affects the unit's hit rate for basic attacks and projectile attacks. The number on the left shows the default attack value, and the number of the right shows the increase based on the equipped weapon.
  • Weight (重量): Goes up the more weapons a unit has in their inventory. A unit cannot pick up any more weapons if they exceed their Weight.
  • Equipped (装備): Lists the currently equipped weapon.

Battle[]

Each unit has a WT value that decreases as turns pass. When it reaches 0, units can be given commands. Using certain actions will result in the WT filling up. Units have different affinities with certain weapons, and can gain increased stats when using a weapon they have good affinity with. WT is increased the more weapons and Weight a unit has.

Attacks are dependent on direction, and deal more damage when attacking enemy units from the side or from behind, which also affects enemy guard chances. Skills are also dependent on direction, with blinding skills more effective when used from the front.

Units may gain stat increases or decreases when adjacent to characters they have affinity with. Good affinity will result in higher stat increases.

Game Modes[]

The original game had 3 main modes:

  • Rousokutomoshi-hen (蝋燭灯し編 Candle-Lighting Chapter): a story mode consisting of 5 stages.
  • Sakuryakudameshi-hen (策略試し編 Tactics-Testing Chapter): a free battle mode allowing you to freely choose units and stages.
  • Narakuotoshi-hen (奈落堕し編 Hell-Falling Chapter): a survival mode where you set your own playable units, and must clear as many stages as possible. Certain stages will have special conditions, with stage 30 for example requiring you to fight an army of Tomitakes.[3]

The Plus O version removes the story mode[4] and adds support for online play against other players in a Sekaihiroshi-hen (世界広し編 World-Spreading Chapter) mode. Additional new game modes include:

  • Hataatsume-hen (旗集め編 Flag-Collecting Chapter): a capture-the-flag gamemode where you must capture enemy flags by having units hold onto them for as long as possible.[5]
  • Babanuki-hen (ババ抜き編 Old Maid Chapter): a random unit of each team is chosen to be the BOSS, and teams must become the first to defeat the other team's BOSS.
