Higurashi Oni Chapter 14 (第14話 Dai Jyuuyon Wa) is the fourteenth chapter of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Oni.

Summary[]

The Chief is frightened as Souhei and other Hinamizawa workers crowd around him. Souhei leans in and whispers that he senses some bad signs with the natives, and that they'll have seizures if things continue like this. The Chief immediately realizes the problem and defers to Souhei's authority. Nakamoto apologizes and says he got rough because the Chief laid hands on Tama, and felt he had to do something. Souhei asks the other workers if they're feeling unwell and says to take deep breaths. The Chinese-speaking native and glasses man ask if things really will be okay when he says that. Souhei tells everyone to get back to work, and figures he'll have to talk to the Chief later.

Dr. Takano hears of what happened and asks if Souhei went outside. Souhei says he hasn't done so since being assigned, and that natives aren't allowed to leave anyway. Dr. Takano says the Colonel is visiting that day and requests Souhei to deliver a report to him in his place. He simply tells Souhei to change into plain clothes and to just follow the Colonel's orders. Souhei accepts the job, feeling confused.

That night, Souhei meets the Colonel at a nightclub and dresses in a tuxedo. The Colonel warns him not to give any of the club workers his name, rank, or where he's from. Souhei manages to avoid giving the club manager his name as a lady with buns warms up to him, figuring out that he's a soldier. The lady asks for more info and Souhei nervously gives his name as just Ori. The Colonel then shows up and tells the lady to stop, as they're on a top-secret mission.

After spending some time, Souhei and the Colonel decide to leave, feeling that it would be detrimental to their intelligence gathering if other people found they were there. The lady with buns tells Souhei to come alone next time.

As Souhei and the Colonel return back in a car, the Colonel says that lady was actually an agent from the general staff office, and that their enemies aren't just from outside. Souhei takes this to mean the clinic is under investigation, and the Colonel replies that there'll be no problems with it and the factory for now. The Colonel says he's the one who's under more suspicion, as he had issues with the Department of War a long time ago. Souhei asks why he's telling him so many important things, and the Colonel says he's heard about his character from Takano and wants to make him an officer. Souhei turns down the offer, as he wanes to return home to Oryou.

The Colonel suddenly says that Takano's calling the Hinamizawa endemic disease Hinamizawa Syndrome. He recaps what the symptoms of the disease are, and that the Hinamizawa native soldiers who caused trouble in their own units won't cause any more issues so long as they're in Takano's care; allies won't fire at one another.

Seiji temporarily regains consciousness in the underground ritual storehouse. Ritsuka tells Okai she can still look after him, and is sure that he's still human and hasn't become a demon. Okai reminds her to keep shaking Seiji awake every day, and to give him nutrition so it'll ease his symptoms. Okai considers that Seiji's been down here for almost three months and is still alive after clawing at his throat, and wonders if they should wake him up for real. Okai decides that Ritsuka shouldn't give him sleeping medication today and to wake him up. He could get violent after waking up, so Okai tells Ritsuka to wait as she fetches some men. Ritsuka is concerned about what will happen.

Ritsuka fully wakes up Seiji. He calls out her name in surprise and Ritsuka is happy that he seems to have gone back to normal, but Okai tells her to stop. The confused Seiji looks at Okai and Shigeru who's with her, but sees their faces as obscured and deformed. He also thinks Ritsuka's gotten bigger, and soon falls back asleep.

Okai gets angry and warns Ritsuka that she'll forbid her from coming down here if she keeps doing that. Ritsuka apologizes and asks to continue to be allowed to look after Seiji. Okai reminds her that demons are known for deceiving people, and that Seiji might still have it hidden away inside him. Ritsuka is sure that Seiji is strong enough to defeat the demon.
