Higurashi Mahjong

Not to be confused with Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Jan.

Higurashi Mahjong (ひぐらし麻雀) is a Higurashi When They Cry mahjong game released by Dwango for DoCoMo, SoftBank, and au mobile phones in 2008.

Gameplay and Game Modes[]

Higurashi Mahjong is a standard riichi mahjong game in which you play as Keiichi Maebara against CPU opponents in one-on-one matches. Game modes include:

Story Mode: Play through an original story mode against a series of opponents. There will be 8 opponents in total, with the 7th and 8th opponents changing based on different conditions.
Free Game Mode: Choose an opponent and difficulty level. Opponents unlocked at the start are Rena Ryuugu, Satoko Houjou, Rika Furude, Mion Sonozaki, Shion Sonozaki, and Wakaba Inoue. Jirou Tomitake, Miyo Takano, Minoru Kajiwara, Hanyuu, Kuraudo Ooishi, and Mamoru Akasaka are unlocked after facing them in Story Mode. Crazy Rena and Dark Rika can also be unlocked as opponents.
Gauntlet Mode: Play against a random series of opponents.

Plot Summary[]

After school one day, the club decides to play mahjong. Keiichi goes up against the other members in one-on-one matches and aims to make everyone dress in costumes and act as his servants for a day if he wins. He goes up against Rena and then Rika. While Keiichi is anticipating the third opponent, Wakaba Inoue shows up, having also stayed after school to help the teacher. The other club members convince Wakaba to play along despite her only seeing her dad play it in the past. Keiichi gets annoyed that losing to Wakaba would count, and Mion reminds him that the terms were a one-on-one battle with everyone and "the others", and leaves for a moment while Keiichi and Wakaba play. Mion returns after the game, and Wakaba goes home to make dinner for her dad. Satoko faces Keiichi next but loses. Mion is the last club member to go up against Keiichi and also loses, but right then Shion arrives, having gotten a call that Satoko was in trouble. Keiichi realizes Mion left to go call her earlier. The others convince Shion to help since Satoko will be in danger from Keiichi's costume plans, and Keiichi agrees to fight Shion in exchange for her becoming a club member if he loses.

Shion also loses, but Mion is unable to accept defeat and tells Keiichi to wait since she prepared for more helpers to arrive. The 7th and 8th rounds of Story Mode will be different depending on criteria. For the 7th round, Shion runs off to retrieve Tomitake and Takano and get their help. The 7th opponent will randomly be Tomitake or Takano. If Tomitake is chosen he'll duel Keiichi because he's embarrassed by the thought of doing a punishment game. If Takano is chosen, Tomitake will refuse since he sees Keiichi as a friend, while Takano will choose to help the girls. After Tomitake or Takano's defeat, they will leave since it's almost time to take photos.

For the 8th and final round, there is a different opponent selected from Hanyuu, Akasaka, Minoru Kajiwara, and Ooishi. Hanyuu arrives feeling like Rika was calling her, and decides to face Keiichi when Rika promises cream puffs if she wins. When Hanyuu loses, Satoko says she bought creampuffs for tonight's dessert, and so Hanyuu goes home to prepare dinner. Akasaka arrives having come to Hinamizawa on a trip with his wife and wanted to see Rika. Ooishi is told by Wakaba that the club was playing mahjong, and decides to join in. Kajiwara shows up as a reinforcement called by Mion earlier. Once Keiichi beats all of the opponents, the club members accept their defeat as Keiichi looks forward to tomorrow.

There are multiple bad endings that occur when losing, many of which involve Keiichi lamenting the end of his dreams. Losing against Wakaba will have Rena take her home.
