Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni (彼岸花の咲く夜に, lit. On the Night the Red Spider Lily Blooms), subtitled The Unforgiving Flowers Blossom in the Dead of Night, is a manga and visual novel series written by Ryukishi07 of 07th Expansion.
Official Introduction
Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni is a sound novel set in an elementary school haunted by a group of seven youkai (spirits) who feed off of the souls of bullied children.
One such child, Marie Moriya, is struggling with the psychological turmoil of being repeatedly abused by her own teacher, and lives each day in misery. That is until she encounters the mischievous youkai Higanbana, who offers her a chance at revenge.
Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni is a horror story that examines the boundary between life and death.[1]
Gameplay
Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni's visual novels consist of seven chapters (with the Second Night featuring an additional epilogue). The first chapter of each respective games is unlocked by default and additional chapters are unlocked by completing the previous chapter; upon completing the last chapter of the game, Library and Music Room are unlocked.
Similar to most other 07th Expansion works; Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni is a linear visual novel, meaning that player choices are not available.
Story
Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni is an anthology of stories centered around a school haunted by youkai, spirits who prey on humans and often meddle in the everyday lives of the students there. Of the many youkai who inhabit the school, seven of them stand ranked at the top.
Marie Moriya is a young girl who is facing abuse from her teacher and wishes to break free from him. After meeting Higanbana, the third ranked of the school youkai, Marie is given the choice to become a youkai herself.
Concept and Development
The concept began as a short story called Gakkou Youkai Kikou that was published in November 29, 2006 and received a one-shot manga adaptation in August 20, 2007, featuring the characters Marie Moriya and Higanbana. During the completion of Umineko When They Cry, Ryukishi07 decided to write more short stories and expand on the themes and characters of Gakkou Youkai Kikou, releasing a manga titled Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni that ran from May 2010 to November 2012.[2]
Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni was finally remade as a sound novel that introduced many more characters and stories by 07th Expansion with two installments: the First Night and the Second Night.
