Kanji Romaji Translation

Akenai yoru
Kazoe nagara
Sugisatta hi
Omoitsudzuketa

Meguru yume no naka
Kiete yuku kageboushi

As you counted
The unending nights,
Recalling the days
That passed you by—

Into these pirouetting dreams,
Your silhouette vanishes

Afureru tsui no negai
Tsukiru koto nai
Koukai no hate

Ka no kishi[1]
Watarenu mama
Oroka na hana to chiru

Dying wishes overflow
At the bounds
Of inexhaustible regrets

Unable to cross over
To that other shore—
You are but a foolish bloom, strewn about

Tsutsumare
Ibuku towa no yami
Tsumeta sugite
Mogaku dake no meguri yoru

"Karenaide, watashi-tachi wa
Utsukushii mama..."

Engulfed,
Breathing the eternal darkness
Too cold to bear,
Thrashing around in the looping nights

"Don't wither, we remain
Beautiful as we are..."

Odorou yo
Ikusen no tsuki
Tozasareta me wo
Eguru you ni

Honoka ni yure,
Anata izanau

"Ochite warau wa, dare...?"

Come, let us dance
For thousands of moons
As if we were prying
Into those closed eyes

Faintly swaying,
Inviting you

"wHO wILL fALL aND wHO wILL sNEER...?"[2]

Come, let us dance
For thousands of moons

Into those closed eyes

Faintly swaying,
Inviting you
When many lose their way in the twilight

Tatazumu
Ano ko wa dare?
Tozasareta
Kioku no naka ni

Tawamure kataru mono ga
Anata to yubi wo kiru

Who is she,
That lingering child?
Deep within
Memories sealed away

The one who speaks capriciously
Makes a promise with you

Hashi ni himeru wa
Onyou no uta
Iki wo tomete
"Kokoro" tachikiru no nara

Tooryanse[4]
Sono saki wa mou,
Jakumetsu no hotori

The chants of Yin and Yang
Hide at the borders
If you were to hold your breath
And cast away your "heart"—

You may pass,
Beyond them reside
The banks of paradise

Watarou yo
Yami no hoshi
Kegareta ito wo
Hodoku you ni

Kamikudaite mo,
Kawaki wa iezu
Korogaru
Hone no naka de...

Come, let us ferry
Across the stars of the dusk
As if we were disentangling
These sullied threads

Even if you chewed it all to bits,
Your thirst cannot be quelled
As you linger await
Within those scattered bones...

"Nan'no tame ni umare,
Ikite iku no?
Oshiete kudasai,
Hito no ikiru imi wo..."

"Why are we born,
What do we live for?
Please teach me,
About the meaning to human life..."

"Kono yoru wa,
Kochou no yume.
Anata no tame ni
Ikinasai..."

Karenu hana wa
Nai yo to warau
Utsushiyo wo
Koete ima, todoke.

Watashi ni saita
Higan no hana
Onore no chi wa
Mutsumi no mama yo...

"This night
Is no more than a butterfly's dream[5].
Please live,
For only your own sake..."

'There are no flowers that won't wither'—
Reality shall laugh at you so
Overcome this mortal world
And may you reach, at last.

Oh, dear equinox flower
That bloomed for me—
Your blood shall remain
Virtuous as always...

"Ochite warau wa, dare...?"

"wHO wILL fALL aND wHO wILL sNEER...?"[2]

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Ka no Kishi (彼の岸, lit. the "other" shore) refers to the other side of the Sanzu River, where one is sent to the afterlife. The word can also mean "nirvana". This meaning comes about as it is understood in Buddhism that after the departed complete the trial of crossing the Sanzu River, they reach a state of enlightenment after parting with the mortal world.
  2. 2.0 2.1 Stylization: This line has been written using Kanji and Katakana in the place of classic Hiragana. Often, such quirky stylization is used to evoke a certain feeling in the reader, with reference to context. In this line, it may be a sense of foreboding or horror.
  3. Tasogare is traditionally written as (黄昏(たそがれ), lit. Twilight), as seen in the song title. But here it has been written as がれ which could literally mean "the others"—usually written as Darekare (誰彼(だれかれ))
This wordplay is first utilized in the visual novel Tasogare which released in 2001. It is also previously seen in another song from the Higurashi When They Cry fandom, Tasokare.
You may pass) is a Japanese Warabe Uta. It is also commonly played at traffic signals. Songs from the Higurashi When They Cry fandom, namely Unmei no Wa and Nageki no Mori also reference this nursery tune.
  5. The Butterfly Dream refers to an ancient Chinese tale in which a man dreams of being a butterfly. When the man awakens, he begins to wonder whether he was a man who dreamed of being a butterfly or a butterfly now dreaming of being a man. This story is a classic from Eastern philosophy associated with the Dream argument—which questions the authenticity of a human being's perception of reality.

Trivia[]

  • At the beginning of the OP movie to the game, there are whispers of children over the music. The content is roughly as follows:
"Hey, hey, did you know?" "Nee, nee, shitteru no?")
"Did you hear that 'Meso Meso' crying noise?" "Meso Meso tte naitenno, kiita?")
"There's a rumor that it appears in the old school building..." "Kyuukousha ni derutte uwasa…")
