|This article is about a character in Umineko When They Cry.|
A member of Eiserne Jungfrau, the 7th District Repentance Enforcement Agency of the Great Court of Heaven. She's a high-level Assistant Inquisitor and a first-class minister.
As an Assistant Inquisitor of Heresy, she is tasked with aiding during interrogations and hearings.
Because most missions end up as executions, she is usually assigned the job of using barriers to block the target's means of escape.
When it comes to fulfilling her missions, she is calm, flawless, expressionless and emotionless. However, most of the time, she is quite compassionate, and is loved by many of her Juniors.
She has already passed her exam to become a full Inquisitor and was offered a vacant position in a different district, but she refused. She waits for a reassignment under Dlanor, to whom she owes a great debt, and continues to serve alongside her as an assistant. Therefore, though she is an assistant, she is treated as an Inquisitor (third-class archbishop).
Gertrude wears a uniform similar to Cornelia's, a black leotard with white frills and blue sleeves. She has red eyes and long blond hair.
Like her comrades, Gertrude appears extremely deadpan when on duty, but is actually a very charitable character well-liked by her juniors. She has a tendency to say "Allow me to speak. Let it be said that ..." before saying anything, especially when stating a Red Truth.
Gertrude joined the Great Court of Heaven as an Inquisitor.
From an anti-fantasy perspective, Gertrude personifies a receipt stuck into a doorframe, to signify if people open it or not.
Role in the Story
Gertrude makes her first appearance alongside Dlanor and Cornelia. They're summoned by Erika when she tries to prove that Kinzo doesn't exist in his study.
Cornelia the New Priest features Gertrude giving some pep talk to Cornelia when her proposal for a Halloween project doesn't work too well.
Gertrude is not a playable character, but she can be summoned by Dlanor to assist her in some of her attacks. She can also be unlocked as a system voice.
- Gato in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei, a manga sequel to Higurashi When They Cry, has a similar appearance to Gertrude. "Gato" sounds like the first half of Gertrude's name pronounced in Japanese (Gātorūdo), and the symbol worn near Gato's neck resembles the symbol seen on Eiserne Jungfrau uniforms. Gato's assistant additionally looks similar to Cornelia.
