Furniture

	This article is about a piece of terminology in Umineko When They Cry.

Furniture (家具, Kagu) describes a variety of servants created by those with magical abilities. They are often used as butlers or maids, and often have hidden combat abilities to double as bodyguards for their masters.

Origin

The term is used for the first time in the story by Kanon immediately after he's formally introduced in Legend of the Golden Witch. It is then used extensively by Kanon, Shannon, and Genji Ronoue, the three servants who report to Kinzo Ushiromiya directly, through out the story.

True Origin

MAJOR UMINEKO SPOILER WARNING This article or section contains untagged major spoilers for all of Umineko When They Cry, possibly including the manga. Readers who have not completed the story are advised not to proceed further.

The term is used to refer to any beings who are less than human and was most likely created by Yasu. The descriptive term is rooted in Yasu's idea of being a lesser being to ordinary humans, equivalent to the Furniture people use to help themselves. This is probably the reason that all forms of Furniture are servants. Genji Ronoue's advice to servants that they must be faithful, yet silent and observatory as furniture are to their masters further reinforces this view.

In Requiem of the Golden Witch, it is suggested that from a real world perspective, Furnitures were drawn by Yasu in some sort of drawing book (which could be Maria's grimoire), which explains how a drawing of Sakutarou was found in Maria's grimore during Alliance of the Golden Witch. A majority of Furniture are also shown to be inspired by servants and coworkers that Yasu worked with in the past.

In Answer to the Golden Witch, Ryukishi07 revealed that Shannon (and likely Kanon) sarcastically calls herself furniture because of her body being unable to love. This is a callback to Yasu's emotional outburst in the Requiem of the Golden Witch Tea Party, a conflict further explored in the manga-exclusive chapter Confession of the Golden Witch.

• Certain Furniture (Ronove, Gaap, Furfur, Zepar, and Flauros) are based off of demons from the Ars Goetia, a section of the Lesser Key of Solomon.
