Letters From A Certain Girl (ある少女からの手紙 Aru Shōjo Kara no Tegami) is a Higurashi When They Cry extra arc that was released in Onisarashi Premier Book. Set some time after the events of Onisarashi, it features a series of letters sent from an unnamed girl to Akira Toudou, where she shares her fears that her class will figure out she's from Hinamizawa and starts to grow increasingly reliant on her correspondences with Akira.

Plot Summary[]

An unnamed girl writes a letter to Akira and consoles him, saying that she believes Akira understands Natsumi after the incident she caused, but worries that he does misunderstand her by some chance and so wanted him to know that. She expresses how Natsumi is also a victim and her heart is wounded, and encourages Akira to wait for her to return since he’s the only one who can help her.

In a second letter, the unnamed girl is surprised that Akira responded and clarifies that she’s not an acquaintance of Akira and Natsumi, just a girl who goes to the same school as them. She’s similar to Natsumi in having her father originate in Hinamizawa and having Hinamizawa blood. The girl is afraid of revealing her name for fear of what could happen to her given all the tabloid reports and gossip surrounding Hinamizawa.

In a third letter, the girl thanks Akira for being so understanding and laments that her classmates are not the same since they frequently gossip about Hinamizawa and treat Natsumi like a monster. She believes that this is societal stress, where people are wanting a scapegoat to offload their daily stress onto.

In a fourth letter, the girl hopes that some other incident will happen that will take attention off of Hinamizawa. The girl is pessimistic for the future because of how society looks to newsworthy incidents as sacrificial lambs and is ignorant. In a PS, the girl worries that her classmates know she’s from Hinamizawa now, remembering that she told some students last year that she lived in Okinomiya.

In the fifth letter, the girl is convinced that her being a Hinamizawan is now known by the school, and thinks she’s being mistreated through students gossiping when she’s not around and looking at her coldly. The girl talked with her parents about it but they aren’t worried, which upsets her. She feels like her letters to Akira are offering her peace of mind and wants to keep up their correspondence, but is understanding if he doesn’t want to send responses anymore.

In the sixth letter, the girl thanks Akira for continuing their correspondence. The girl is now convinced her class is bullying her and doesn’t know what to do since her parents told her to keep going to school, and doesn’t want Akira to tell her the same thing.

In the seventh letter, the girl says she cut her wrists and tried to kill herself in her bathtub, but her mother discovered her. The girl says she used to do this in middle school. Her father also found out and scolded her, and so the girl feels like she isn’t safe at home anymore. The girl apologizes to Akira even though he told her to keep living, and asks if he hates her now and thinks she’s disgusting.

In the eighth letter, the girl responds to Akira and promises not to cut her wrists and attempt suicide anymore. She says Akira has a magic power to heal her heart and wants to keep using it. She explains how she only goes out at night to look into Akira’s mailbox, and always worries about whether or not there’s a letter in there. The girl encloses the razor blade she used to cut herself, as proof of her vow to never do it again.

In the ninth letter, the girl says the demon that possessed Natsumi must also be possessing her, and is growing restless. It tells the girl to kill her parents and wants to see human blood, even if it’s the girl’s own. The girl intends to buy sleeping pills and die in her sleep, and wants Akira to send her one last letter so she can die holding it.

In the tenth letter, the girl thanks Akira for waiting for her in front of his mailbox and talking with her for a long time, leaving her unable to buy sleeping pills. She then read his response and cried, still feeling like the demon will take over so long as she’s still alive. The girl gets angry at Akira for ordering her around since her life belongs to herself alone, and proposes that her life belong to the both of them. She promises not to kill herself in that case, and wants to make a pinky promise in person. If Akira hates her now however, she wants him to write it.

In the next few letters, Akira apparently stops sending responses. The girl begins losing her mind and constantly sends letters, asking when he’ll send another response and thinking her bullies are stealing them from the mailbox. The girl says she's always waiting for a response, and then threatens to kill herself with sleeping pills if Akira doesn’t send one, and will always be waiting after her death.

The girl sends another letter as an apology, thinking that her request to make her life belong to Akira’s was an immoral one. She thinks Akira wants to help her but also doesn’t want to betray Natsumi, and that him being silent was a way to convey that. The girl admits she confused his kindness for love, and wants to go back to corresponding with him.

Akira finally sends a response, and the girl replies to it. She happily promises to never attempt suicide again, and has enclosed her severed pinky from her left hand as proof of their promise, since she’s lost the right to do it in person. She makes Akira promise to keep sending letters until Natsumi returns, and to leave notes of when he’ll send one if he’s busy. The girl describes how his letters are the only thing preventing her from killing her parents and herself. If she ever sees an empty mailbox, she’ll take it as a sign Akira’s abandoning her. The girl expresses how happy she is to be reading Akira’s letters and awaits a response.
