Black Battler (黒き戦人 Kuroki Batora), also called B. Battler and the Black Interpretation of Battler Based On the Battler Culprit Theory (戦人犯人説に基づく黒き解釈の戦人(・・))[2], is an evil version of Battler Ushiromiya who personifies Battler culprit theories. He first appears in Forgery no.XXX.

Profile[]

Known as "Black Battler". An existence born from the Fragment of the Battler culprit theory, which is spelled out in some Forgeries. Although he is a piece that looks the same as Battler Ushiromiya, his role is completely different. He is free to do anything as long as the audience is not bored.

Appearance[]

Black Battler initially has the same appearance as Battler, but when entering the Golden Land he gains a new appearance and different-colored clothes. His eyes are red with cat-like pupils. He now wears a purple suit and pants, with a red tie and black shirt.

Personality[]

He usually talks in an almost emotionless, slow and calm fashion, though he is also prone to fits of deranged laughter. He is also extremely sadistic and cruel at times. In Bernkastel's game, he is also deceptive, to the point that it is believable, going as far as faking tears and denying it when Maria found out that he and his parents were the culprits. Interestingly, however, he seems to regret his role as the culprit. As he is created to entertain the theories of Battler being the culprit, it is possible his personality is simply that of a Battler forced to kill and act like a cold-blooded killer.

Abilities[]

The full extent of his powers are unknown, but he was able to defeat Ronove with ease.

In Golden Fantasia, Black Battler's moveset is made up of alternate variants of Battler's moveset. The main difference is in his SP2, which is a reenactment of the end of Bernkastel's game in Twilight of the Golden Witch, where Rudolf and Kyrie appear next to him and rapidly shoot the opponent. Interestingly, he wields "Black Forgery" based attacks, in comparison to Battler who wields Blue Truth based attacks. He is also able to lie with the Purple Declaration since he is a culprit.

Background[]

Black Battler's origins are unclear. What is known about him is that he is powered by the culprit theories of Battler and his family. In Forgery no.XXX, Ronove states that he appeared in Land of the Golden Witch and Trinity of the Golden Witch, game boards created by Beatrice.

In Golden Fantasia, some characters suggest other possible origins for Black Battler. Dialogue with Bernkastel suggests that she created him when making her game. Another dialogue with Erika Furudo suggests that he was created in End of the Golden Witch when Battler made a theory using himself as the culprit to counter Erika's Natsuhi culprit theory.

Relationships[]

Role in the Story[]

Twilight of the Golden Witch[]

Black Battler as a concept first appears in Bernkastel's game. He and his parents are revealed to be the culprits, with Battler himself having killed Shannon. They soon kill Maria and George.

In the manga, during the battle in the Golden Land, Erika summons several goats to take the form of Ushiromiya family members, inspired by the culprit theories of the future. The Battler goat proves to be the strongest because of how common Battler culprit theories are, but Beatrice kills him without a thought using the red truth that "Ushiromiya Battler is not the culprit!"

Umineko no Naku Koro ni Hane[]

Forgery no.XXX features the first proper appearance of Black Battler with his purple suit. He arrives on Rokkenjima as Battler Ushiromiya, then enters the Golden Land and assumes his true form. Ronove greets him and then they duel, ending with Ronove's death. Beatrice then welcomes Black Battler. Black Battler displays awareness of Tohya's existence, addressing the latter directly and challenging him to stop him.

Black Battler soon returns to the game board and orders Kanon to help him in his murders.

Golden Fantasia[]

In Hard Mode, Black Battler is the final boss, consisting of a team with himself and his palette swap, and has all of the other characters' special abilities (excluding Lambdadelta, Bernkastel and Willard). After defeating him, a picture of him with staff comments is unlocked.

Black Battler can also be unlocked as a playable character by beating Arcade Mode once on any difficulty as a team of Battler and any other character. Black Battler has only one story mode route with Shannon. In this route, the two of them join forces to commit murders on Rokkenjima. At the very end, Shannon offers her life to Black Battler and is killed by him.

He also appears implicitly in Kanon and Battler's story mode, which is a retelling of the events in Forgery no. XXX.

Other Appearances[]

Angel of 17 Years East Shi-44a[]

Black Battler appears in yaoi scenarios created by Ange and Virgilia. He is paired with Battler and Hachijo Tohya.

Trivia[]

  • Since Hane and Golden Fantasia Cross were released on the same day, Black Battler technically debuted in those two titles at the same time.
  • His palette swap in the fighting game is that of Tohya Hachijo.
    • In one of his quotes when defeating Beatrice, he says that he will finish all of her stories, which is similar to what Tohya did by continuing the stories of Yasu's message bottles through Banquet of the Golden Witch to Dawn of the Golden Witch.
    • In the visual novel version of Forgery No. XXX Black Battler displays awareness of Tohya's existence, addressing the latter directly and challenging him to stop him.[3]
  • Some of his quotes in Golden Fantasia are stating one of the rules of the Purple Declaration followed by a distinctive chuckle. This may hint at him being created by Bernkastel since she also created the Purple Declaration, or simply being a character in the game where these rules were introduced.
