Story[]
Part 1[]
After the events of Low-Pressure Girls, it is the beginning of summer but it is already scorching hot from Kyon's point of view. In the middle of that he realizes he forgot some homework in the clubroom, needing to go back there even though it's a holiday. Somehow, he ends up meeting Haruhi when he arrives there. She was just silently watching him, refusing to tell why she's there. However, she suddenly brings up how she had a dream about Hinamizawa. She refuses to talk about it though, even thinking about it hurt her. Haruhi wonders if she told Kyon why she wanted to see ghosts. Kyon confirms she didn't. She wants to know if souls really exist and what happens to the will of the deceased.
Part 2[]
Haruhi explains her intent. If the rumors about ghosts in Hinamizawa are true, then they are there due to regretful feelings due to having their life suddenly taken from them due to the gas disaster. Ghosts can attain enlightenment and leave this world due to regrets or grudges. She wants to hear what they feel, their stories. One day, she will die, as will everyone else from the SOS Brigade, when that day comes, she doesn't want to leave regrets and grudges behind. She wanted to meet a ghost to understand how she could pass on happy and satisfied.
On the other hand, Haruhi doesn't want to go to heaven either. She doesn't think everyone living together with infinite happiness is possible. People's values clash so in that case, you'd need concessions for each other. She doesn't want to hold back her feelings and feign "peace" just to keep an image of happiness. Kyon wonders if Haruhi's idea of happiness is just her own convenience. Haruhi explains that even if she tries to consider others, it's just her own view of others, which might not match reality. So, in the end, she can only struggle for her own happiness.
Kyon comes to wonder if Haruhi fears dying and becoming a ghost. She doesn't want to leave all memory, knowledge and personality from this world reduced to just regret. Staying in the world forever dominated by those thoughts wouldn't be fun. Kyon tells her regrets aren't necessarily negative. When you have fun, of course you don't want it to end. Haruhi's regrets for not finding any club fulfilling were what led to the formation of the SOS Brigade in the first place. When you lose something, you might be hurt, but you're also encouraged to find it again.
Haruhi tells Kyon sometimes when she talks with him she ends up finding herself to be silly, while Kyon silently agrees. Kyon convinces her to help him with his homework, although he'd need to follow her pace.
Part 3[]
Within a dream, Haruhi is spreading pamphlets recruiting new members for the SOS Brigade in Hinamizawa's branch school. She isn't interested in normal humans, but the ghosts there are all welcome. Haruhi picks up Kazuho Kimiyoshi's hand. At first glance she might seem normal, but Haruhi is sure there's a special air around her. Mion protests, she can't allow Haruhi to take a promising new club member from her. Haruhi offers Kazuho three meals with freshly cooked rice every day if she joins, which gets Kazuho actually considering it. Miyuki cries that their friendship was worth less than rice. Nao tells her it's her fault due to exaggerating on the bread lately.
Haruhi proposes a game, if she wins she takes Kazuho to the SOS Brigade. Rena accepts the bet. She doesn't want to lose anyone, but she believes only in a serious confrontation they can express how much they care for each other, and she is sure Haruhi thinks the same, maybe. Mion decides to accept, as Rika, Satoko and Hanyuu join the game. Yuki and Koizumi get ready for a serious battle, which gets Kyon warning them they're just facing humans. However, Mion interrupts and decides she will take Kyon to the club if they win. Miyuki wonders why him, and Mion explains he seems to be the one Haruhi cares for the most among the SOS Brigade members, so if they want her fighting serious, he is the clear choice. Haruhi hopes to meet them again in reality, searching for mysteries of the world and having fun together.
